By Sonia K
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Institute of Medicine in Universiti Brunei
Darussalam, which pioneers undergraduate and postgraduate education
in Brunei Darussalam, will be organising the 2°d Annual Academic
Session, carrying the theme "Cultivating Research Talents through
Interdisciplinary Collaborations on March 10 and 11.
Healthcare is becoming increasingly
complex with individuals from many different professions being
involved in the diagnosis, treatment and care of each patient.
Similarly, medical research involves interdisciplinary teams
collaborating together.
This event focuses on stimulating
the links between key health disciplines.
It will bring together health
professionals as well as biomedical and life science researchers,
and provide a platform for them to share and highlight their
research interests, present original research findings, promote
discussions and interdisciplinary collaborations and create an
awareness of the importance of research while sharing information
within the medical, health and basic science communities in Brunei
Darussalam.
The theme "Cultivating Research
Talents through Interdisciplinary Collaborations" is important and
timely for the Institute of Medicine as it is developing and
introducing various programmes in medicine, biomedical and life
sciences and allied health, partnering with wellrenowned
international universities in teaching, learning and building its
capacity in research.
The Institute of Medicine through
its local academics and highly experienced international faculty
members is actively developing research projects in various areas of
biomedical and health sciences, environmental science,
epidemiological studies, genetics and pharmacology, neuroscience,
and medical and health profession education including
inter-professional education.
These research projects have been
developed through collaborations between faculty members within the
Institute itself, through faculties within UBD, and with various
health professionals at the Ministry of Health as well as with
institutions in Bangladesh, Canada, Iran, Japan, France, and
Germany. Malaysia, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sri Lanka
and the United Kingdom.
Such collaborations are expected to
enhance research culture amongst local .and expatriate academics at
the university thus raising the profile of the Institute of Medicine
and UBD, both nationally and internationally.
Last year's session brought
together a total of 51 research presentations pertaining to current
practices, techniques and interesting findings in medicine, surgery
and community health as well as the latest development and future
directions in the area of biomedical science.
An exhibition by medical and
laboratory suppliers will also be held at the sessions.
Registration forms can be obtained
from the Institute of Medicine or the UBD website at www.ubd.edu.bn.
