Bumpy Adventure To Melilas
By Jon Tampoi

Bandar Seri Begawan - It was a blend of rough terrains, moments of uncertainty, adrenaline rushes and great anticipation.

This is a glimpse into the adventure of teams of 4-wheel driving thrill seekers who recently embarked on a two-day adventure that took them on a bumpy ride into the interiors of Brunei Darussalam.

On Day One, groups of people gathered at the Lamunin Police Station to register their participation for the journey to Melilas.

Both the young and the old signed up for the adventure, ranging from a chirpy 10-year-old girl to enthusiastic lecturers and photographers, among others.

Picturesque and pristine, the Merimbun Lake road was but half the journey of the exciting adventure ahead.

The adventure that began at 1.30 pm took thrill seekers further into the interior of Brunei Darussalam, introducing them to pit and gravel roads.

Up ahead, they were presented with a new challenge - to make it past stretches of eight-inch mud routes, which was tricky, given rain had affected the area a day earlier.

This proved to be a difficulty feat. Aside from the vehicles of Ahmad Wa'ez Aman, Mohd Khair Alikhan, Mastani Hj Mohamad, Ezzeddin Hj Abd Rahman and Mohd Azurin Othman, others couldn't help but find themselves mired in the mud.

Reaching the boundaries of Tutong, we were greeted by a huge signboard welcoming us to the district.

As darkness fell, the adventure became even more challenging. Adding to that was a sudden downpour. By 6.40 pm, we reached the Melilas Long House.

Greeting us on our arrival was Mohd Shahrin bin Mohd Halim, the Imam of the longhouse. The Imam has lived in the area for the past seven years with his wife and children.

Our evening is spent at a Community Hall that has been converted into a clinic. After a long and tiring journey, it was a sheer relief to learn that despite being in an open area, mosquitoes were at a minimum.

The next day, we embarked on our journey back, in great anticipation of the adventure that awaited us. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
