Police Probe Baby In Shoebox Claim
By M K Anwar

Bandar Seri Begawan - A shoebox that some eyewitnesses claim contained a body of a dead baby caused concern and curiosity among several people who gathered at a highway bridge in Tutong.

The rather mysterious, foul-smelling box was found buried in a shallow hole under the highway bridge yesterday afternoon in Penanjong.

Witnesses who found the box claimed that they saw the remains of a `dead baby' inside it., Police who were sent to the scene began investigating the claim. The claim comes only three days after a baby dumping case in the capital.

Last Sunday, some workers at the Sg Akar dumpsite found the body of a newborn baby. The decomposing body was found amid piles of garbage.

According to the police, some Indonesian workers were investigating a foul smell emanating from under the bridge when they found the shoebox.

One of the workers, Budi, told the Bulletin that at the time they were taking a break after working to install metal barriers on the highway bridge.

They caught a strong rotting smell and while investigating its source they stumbled upon a black trouser covering a freshly dug ground.

One of the workers accidentally stepped on the area and his foot went straight into the pit.

The two workers immediately called their other friends and started to dig the area. They stumbled upon a shoebox and as they barely opened it, they saw what looked like "two small hands and feet".

Surprised and horrified by the find, they quickly called the police.

Police personnel from the Tutong Police Station arrived soon to inspect the box.

Another worker, Huri, told the Bulletin that they have been working there for several weeks now and they have been taking their breaks under the bridge every afternoon. During that time they did not come across anything strange except for the foul smell yesterday afternoon.

"It might have been buried about three days ago," he said.

Crime Scene Unit detectives were also at the scene gathering evidence. Due to investigative procedures, the police were unable to confirm whether it was the remains of a baby.

At press time, investigations were still ongoing. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
