Eighteen Nabbed In Anti-Vice Op
By Husin Ismail
Bandar Seri
Begawan - In a joint operation by several Brunei's
law-enforcement agencies, 18 people last Saturday night were
apprehended on drug offences and violating the customs and
immigration laws. Some 90 officers from the Royal Brunei Police
Force, the Narcotics Control Bureau, the Royal Customs and Excise,
and the Immigration's Law Enforcement Section took part in the raids
at various villages in Kampong Ayer, which began at midnight.
The 18 people were detained for
questioning, including two locals who were caught for drug abuse.
The rest failed to produce legal travel documents and working
permits. Three were later released on bail.
The three-hour operation codenamed
"Operasi Bersepadu", targeted nine residential areas in Kampong
Ayer.
The operation, the first to be
carried out in Kampong Ayer this year, is part of the law
enforcement agencies' ongoing campaign to enforce and uphold the
sultanate's laws and regulations and to thwart illegal activities,
which threatened the security of the nation.
However, it looked as if the people
in the area had got whiff of the raids as many of the houses raided
were vacant when the officers came.
One of the officers told The Brunei
Times that these elements were probably aware of the impending
action or must be very closely following the authorities' movement.
"We'll get them next time," said the officer, who wished to remain
anonymous.
"We are always on the watch for any
immoral activity in the country and our operation this evening was
only a small part of our efforts to enforce the law and curb the
growth of social evils," said a police spokesperson.
"There will be more such operations
as we want to gradually minimise the unhealthy activities and
generate social awareness amongst members of the community." -- Courtesy of
