Dead Baby Boy Found At Sg Akar
Dumpsite
By M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A worker at the Sungai Akar dumpsite made a
gruesome discovery when he stumbled upon the decomposing body of a
dead baby yesterday afternoon.
|
The body of the baby boy was found
in the middle of mounds of garbage.
According to the police, a
worker at the site found what looked like a newborn baby in the
garbage. Convinced that he had found a dead baby, he quickly
called the police.
The Berakas Police Station
confirmed that they received the call at about 2pm and quickly
sent several officers to investigate.
Police Crime Scene Unit was
also dispatched to the area and was later seen scouring the area
for evidence.
It was later confirmed that the
remains was that of a baby boy and most probably a newborn.
As the incident is still being
probed, the police were unable to confirm whether the body was
dumped at the site or probably at another area before it was

collected and disposed at the
dumpsite by garbage collectors.
Another worker at the dumpsite
said no one is allowed to enter the site without a proper
clearance.
It is also not known how long
the body had been at the dumpsite but according to witnesses it
looked like it had been there for several days now.
Despite the presence of stray
dogs and other animals in the area, the body of the newborn was
said to be intact. |
The police later took the body to
the mortuary for further examination.
More than 300 tonnes of waste per
day are recorded in Brunei-Muara District alone and most of it goes
to the landfill in Sungai Akar.
The body of the infant was found
among the tonnes of garbage that was about to be flattened by heavy
machinery.
The Berakas Police Station has
appealed to members of the public who have information about the
incident to come forward to assist them in the investigation. They
can do so by contacting the nearest police station or the Berakas
Police Station.
In mid February 2006, a body of a
baby was found at the water treatment plant in Jln Tungku Link
resulting in the arrest of a man. Meanwhile, in late December 2005,
the body of a newborn baby was found dumped along Jln Sebatang
Sentul in Kg Luagan Duduk, in Tutong District.
The number of abandoned babies is
still small compared to the country's population. Since 2000 the
Community Development Department of the Ministry of Culture Youth
and Sports has recorded only 19 cases of abandoned babies and all of
whom have been adopted, including two babies in 2005.
It was reported last year that the
department came up with a plan to assist mothers faced with a
dilemma of unwanted children.
Mothers facing such problems can
call the Department of Community Development at its Helpline 141 or
office number 2380678 at Jalan Kebangsaan Lama and offerthem for
adoption. --
