Citizenship Certificates Presented To 315

Bandar Seri Begawan - Some 315 people officially received their citizenship certificates yesterday in recognition of their becoming citizens of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through registration and after meeting requirements under the Brunei Nationality Act.

The presentation ceremony was held at the Fire and Rescue Department's Multi-Purpose Hall, Old Airport in Berakas.

Out of the 315 people, 198 got their certificates under Chapter 5(1), that is Application for Brunei Citizenship Status by Permanent Residents born in the nation and who have passed the Malay Language test.

Another 104 people received them under Chapter 5(6) - Application for Brunei Citizenship Status by husbands for their spouses, while the remaining 13 came under Chapter 8(1) - Application for Brunei Citizenship Status by Permanent Residents born outside the country and who have passed the Malay test.

Present as the event's guest of honour was Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abd Rahman, Deputy Minister of Education, who later presented the certificates.

The welcoming address, meanwhile, was given by the Director of National Registration and Immigration Department cum chairman of the ceremony, Zainal Abidin Dato Paduka Hj Ahmad.

Prior to this, a seminar for the recipients was held in the morning, delivered by officers from the National Registration and Immigration Deparhment.

Briefings were also given by senior officers from various government agencies like UBD, National Adat Istiadat and Information Departments as well as the Dakwah Islamiah Centre. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
