Mobilising Strength Against
Landslides
By AmirAbdullah
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Sultanate's weather is improving. Rain is now
on the decrease and more sunshine is expected.
The wet season Brunei faced had
caused many problems, like landslides and floods that destroyed
vegetation, among others.
Luckily, no fatalities have been
reported.
His Majesty's Government also
created the Natural Disaster Management Centre to come up with
solutions and make preparations for the future.
The excellent disaster drill
carried out earlier this month proved that we are ready to mobilise
our task forces to remote areas, as all medical equipment and water
supplies reached the victims in time.
What matters now is the repair or
construction in areas that have been affected, like Kg Tasek Meradun.
A landslide caused the closure of
Jalan Tutong (leading to BSB), as the road was completely covered
with clay and soil.
The number of lanes has also been
reduced. As a result, the traffic jam is a lot worse than normal and
one has to either use another route or start off earlier than usual.
There is still some confusion
regarding the progress of construction works.
Relevant agencies should also
conduct regular check-ups and have an environmental impact
assessment of any project from now on. -- Courtesy of Borneo
