By Liza Mohd

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Malaysian Chinese man was deported from the country after being caught begging in the Belait town yesterday.

Six enforcement officials from the Belait Immigration Department conducted a surprise inspection in the Belait town after tailing the suspect who actively visited shops for the purpose of collecting donations.

Every person he met agreed to make a cash donation in exchange for books and papers as a form of blessing.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect, who had - just recently entered the country, was on a visitor's pass.

In a separate inspection carried out earlier in the day, two Thai nationals were arrested for breaching the Immigration act, based on a tip-off from members of the public.

Four Immigration officials conducted a surprise check on a shop in Seria while the suspects were carrying out business transactions with customers.

Further inspection revealed that one of the suspects was holding a sponsorship pass, while the other, an employment pass stating the person was employed as a printing technician.

The suspects were also found to be a married couple.

While serving customers at the Seria shop, the suspects were found to be conducting business with customers for the purpose of exchanging baht for Brunei dollars without proper consent. The suspects may face a compound fine of $600 under Regulation 15 and 16 of the Immigration law.

Meanwhile, the Immigration Department thanked the public for the tip-offs in the bid to ensure peace and safety in the country.
