Chinese New Year
By Hanni ABD
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The vibrant lion dance is one of the most
spectacular events of the Chinese New Year festivities.
The performances take place during
the first few days of the celebrations and are believed to bring
good fortune to the households or businesses the dance troupes
visit.
Chung Hua lion dance troupe in
Belait has been practising since December last year to ensure
exceptional performances. Master Chin Fen Khee, a martial arts and
physical education teacher at Chung Hua Middle School, said members
of the lion dance troupe are required to have basic Kung fu skills.
He has been keeping alive the
tradition since 1972 by giving Kung fu lessons to students involved
in the school's Lion Dance Club.
The school's lion dance troupe has
70 members with the youngest being nine years of age.
This year the troupe has accepted
60 invitations to perform at houses, business premises and
associations to usher in the Year of the Boar. -- Courtesy of Borneo
