Cyberspace Youth's Favourite Playground

Kuala Belait - Most young Bruneians here spend their leisure time studying or engaging in cyberspace activities for entertainment and communicating with each other while others prefer to indulge in idle activities to relieve their boredom.

(ITB), who spoke to The Brunei Times said, "We have many assignments to complete so we usually either study or discuss our work in school. We also surf the Net and prepare for our tests."

Another ITB business student commented on some young people who didn't do anything productive with their free time.

"Sometimes I see people my age sit around parking lots and blast music on their car sound systems. They just lepak (loiter) because they have too much time on their hands, she said.

A student from Universiti Brunei Darussalam, who did not want to be named, said that since they hardly got to watch TV in their dormitory, they had to find ways to entertain themselves. "We hang out in groups and do something with our laptops like share songs, chat online or talk about TV series."

But unfortunately there are some who have nothing better to do than engage in frivolous and wasteful activities.

Ilie Rahman, an overseas student said, "I have seen friends ... egg passing cars, take off license plates, shoot 'bb' guns at who they consider social outcasts and throw fireworks at people's house."

She once asked them the reasons for acting like juvenile delinquents, and she was told that they were bored and had nothing better to do.

Ilie suggested that these youngsters take advantage of "all the simple pleasures that Brunei offers, like the beautiful beaches, the Jerudong Park, the National Stadium swimming pool or Polo Club for sports". She said a lot of locals she knew had never even been to Temburong National Park or Tutong Park or visited the many natural beautiful waterfalls in Brunei. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
