Landslide Reaches Doorstep Of
Family Home, Wrecks Storehouse
By Azaraimy
Bandar Seri Begawan - A landslide
put a family in fear of losing their home and property at No 253
Kampong Birau in Tutong District, after a mass of rock and soil
slowly slid down towards the house from a nearby hill.
The landslide filled the entire
compound on one side of the house and almost completely destroyed a
storehouse, with part of its walls and roof having collapsed as a
result.
According to the house owner,
Sahbudin Jali, his family actually noticed the problem years back
when they saw a crack on the hill.
"Only lately, about two weeks ago,
we could see the rocks and soil from the hill begin to slide slowly
towards our house," said Sahbudin. "And now it has reached our
doorstep."
It was the first time that the
family of 20 had experienced a landslide near the home in which they
had lived since 1987.
"The huge landslide maybe
attributed to the recent heavy rains," Sahbudin added.
Some of the members of the family
have moved to the Tutong Rest House in Sungai Basong due to the
encroaching danger; while others insisted on staying on to monitor
the situation and their property.
Yesterday, personnel from the Royal
Brunei Armed Forces worked with Fire and Rescue personnel to clear
out some of the mud and rocks and other debris from the affected
area.
Shabudin meanwhile thanked the
relevant authorities including the Tutong District Office as well as
the Penghulu for their help.
