DST Incoming Call Charges `Not
Hiked'
By Dewi MohdSofri
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Without understanding of the technicalities
involved in technology one cannot' compare the services of the DST
network with those from regional as well as international countries,
clarified Ismawi Dato Kifli, DST's head of public relations and
corporate communications unit.
He was responding to complaints
from the general public regarding incoming call charges and termed
them as unjustified.
"It is not a price hike. Twenty
cents has been the standard charge for incoming calls from the
beginning," said Ismawi.
All matters pertaining to "prices
are proposed to the AITI before implementation," added Ismawi.
Asked whether there are any plans
of reducing the charges, he replied that DST reviews the rate from
time to time.
"We do not extort, as a business we
need to make profit to move forward and provide better and advanced
services," he added.
On the issue of providing 3G or
third-generation mobile technology services, Ismawi said: "We have
been evaluating the system for the past six months and have selected
a better version than what is currently available." He did not
elaborate. The tariff for short message services within the network
has also been cut from 10 cents per SMS to only five cents.
Since 2005, DST has also added WAP
and Internet access through the service together with multimedia
messaging services to the pre-paid card.
The current total of both DST's
Easi and Prima subscribers is more than 250,000 and increasing every
day.
"In fact, the arrival of our
competitors has resulted in an unexpected demand for Easi starter
packs," said DST spokesperson Alex Surin.
Due to the never-ending demand for
Easi starter packs, the DST counters usually runs out of stock -
sometimes within a day of the release of new Sim cards.
"We release the numbers based on
the availability," Alex said, adding that it is not possible to
release starter packs every month.
