to the development of human resources in the area of Islamic banking
and financial sector of the country. It is an important element in
supporting Brunei Darussalam's vision of becoming an Islamic
financial hub in the region and beyond.
After the introduction of a minor
programme on Islamic banking and finance in 2001, UBD took a step
forward by offering a Masters programme in 2006. The CIBFM was
officially established in March 2006 with a temporary office in the
Chancellor Hall building. There are six students in the Islamic
Banking Finance and Management programme at present.
The centre has also compiled a
training directory which offers premier training courses for local
and foreign banking and business industry and is currently
developing its own website.
Together with Brunei International
Financial Centre, Ministry of Finance, the centre is also
formulating training courses for upgrading the financial skills and
knowledge of the country's own financial practitioners. It is also
in the process of forming core partnership with other renowned
international Islamic banking and finance institutions as well as
other conventional institutions.
Yesterday, a foundation laying
ceremony was held for the centre's new building which is located in
the vicinity of the UBD's campus.
The drafting, planning and
financing of the CIBFM building is collaboration between the
university and Ministry of Finance (MOF) together with the Islamic
Development Board Jeddah, with assistance from the Public Works
Department and Attorney's General Chambers. It is expected to be
completed in 2008.
The ceremony was led by Pehin Orang
Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdul Rahman Dato Setia Hj Mohamed
Taib, the Minister of Education who is also the Chairman of UBD's
council. Also in attendance was the Minister of Development, Pehin
