S'wak Authorities Identify Danger
Zones In Pan Borneo Highway
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Travellers, including foreign workers in the
country, who are set to head home for Chinese New Year celebrations
are advised to drive carefully as the Sarawak Public Works
Department has identified at least nine accident-prone spots along
the Pan Borneo highway between Miri and Bintulu.
The department also stated that the
most notorious of the areas is Bukit Song, 30 kilometres south of
Miri, near Lambir National Park, adding that the high number of
accidents can be attributed to the road being built on a steep hill.
It also said the dangerous spots on
the highway are mainly due to the complexity of its topography and
road alignment system.
The department has been directed by
the state government to carry out rectification works at identified
spots as soon as possible, since the 250kilometre Miri-Bintulu
highway is an important link for Bruneians and Sarawakians.
Apart from repairing the danger
zones, soil erosion along the coastal highway in northern Sarawak,
particularly along Miri-Kuala Baram route near Sarawak Brunei
border, will also be tackled.
Meanwhile, the Limbang Road Safety
Council has identified three accident prone areas along the
Trans-Borneo Highway in the district: sharp turns along the new
Limbang Airport Road, Kampong Batu Bekaraang, and Kampong Sayong
junction leading to Limbang-Temburong border.
Tedeungan road, which is usually
used by local motorists travelling to Limbang, has also been named a
danger zone. -- Courtesy of Borneo
