Pre-School Teachers Warned Against
Talking Job Light
By Za'im Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Teaching at pre-school level should not be taken
lightly; there is a need for high commitment, dedication and
creativity among teachers.
This was stated by Acting Director
of Curriculum Development Department Awang Haji Matasan bin Haji
Bungso in his speech yesterday during a briefing for new pre-school
teachers at the Curriculum Development Department in the capital.
Awang
Haji Matasan said, "Planning and implementation of pre-school
education should be made properly and in detail.
"A learning environment with proper
arrangement of furniture, learning tools and recreation area can
attract the attention of children."
Pre-school teachers should not be
tied to a certain approach of teaching; they should, instead, be
creative and modify their approaches from time to time for maximum
impact, he added.
He also said the teachers need to
be able to identify and use available opportunities to assist
children in solving daily problems, explore new learning materials
and guide children in the quest for answers to a variety of
questions.
Teaching at pre-school level needs
to he spontaneous, he said. A pre-school teacher needs to always
think and make decisions promptly.
"The environment at this
(pre-school) level can generate interest as well as desire to go to
school in the future. Knowledge, such as theories on teaching
learning and mind development among children, is important for
moulding pedagogy skills."
He also said pre-school education
is important because it can build and strengthen educational
foundation and pure values among children. How well the
implementation of pre-school curriculum depends greatly on how much
knowledge and ability a teacher possesses.
"Children's experiences at an early
age influence their learning in the future. When one of the key
aspects of development - intellectual, physical, social and
emotional - is missing, it is difficult for a child to resolve
problems, resulting in delayed development."
He said at primary school level,
the teachers "are required to teach on a formal basis. They have to
observe the level of development and personal characteristics of
each child and modify their teaching techniques accordingly".
Some 40 pre-school teachers are
participating in the five-day briefing, which kicked off yesterday
and will run until February 21.
Among the objectives of the event
is to expose new pre-school teachers to effective teaching methods. -- Courtesy of Borneo
