M'sian Fined $9,000 For Illegally
Hiring 3 Workers

Begawan - A Malaysian woman was fined $9,000 after pleading
guilty before the Bandar Magistrate's Court to three charges under
the Immigration Act. She settled the fine yesterday.
The court heard that the defendant,
Then Siew Hiong, 37, employed a 27-year-old Indonesian, Susilawati
binti Adrian, who was in the country under a social visit pass, as
well as two other foreign nationals - Lani Fernandez Laconsay, 30,
from the Philippines and Suparmi, 40, from Indonesia - who were not
under the sponsorship of the defendant.
The offences were revealed during a
raid conducted by Immigration personnel at Junity Hair and Beauty
Saloon at about 11.20am on June 20, 2006.
In a separate case, a Malaysian man
was sentenced to four months' jail and three strokes of the cane for
entering the country without valid travel documents.
Mohd
Suffian bin Abdullah who was riding a motorcycle on his way back to
Limbang was stopped at a roadblock in Kg Ujung Jalan in Temburong on
the night of February 12.
After the defendant failed to
produce his passport, he was handed over to the Immigration
authorities.
It was learnt that the defendant
had been barred from entering Brunei because of a previous offence.
He also admitted that he had
entered the Sultanate through Temburong without a passport. -- Courtesy of Borneo
