By Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Malaysian woman was fined $9,000 after pleading guilty before the Bandar Magistrate's Court to three charges under the Immigration Act. She settled the fine yesterday.

The court heard that the defendant, Then Siew Hiong, 37, employed a 27-year-old Indonesian, Susilawati binti Adrian, who was in the country under a social visit pass, as well as two other foreign nationals - Lani Fernandez Laconsay, 30, from the Philippines and Suparmi, 40, from Indonesia - who were not under the sponsorship of the defendant.

The offences were revealed during a raid conducted by Immigration personnel at Junity Hair and Beauty Saloon at about 11.20am on June 20, 2006.

In a separate case, a Malaysian man was sentenced to four months' jail and three strokes of the cane for entering the country without valid travel documents.

Mohd Suffian bin Abdullah who was riding a motorcycle on his way back to Limbang was stopped at a roadblock in Kg Ujung Jalan in Temburong on the night of February 12.

After the defendant failed to produce his passport, he was handed over to the Immigration authorities.

It was learnt that the defendant had been barred from entering Brunei because of a previous offence.

He also admitted that he had entered the Sultanate through Temburong without a passport. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
