Wi-Fi Wave To Sweep Brunei
By Suria Rina PHA
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Internet access in the country is set to make a
quantum leap as TelBru has taken the initiative to introduce
nationwide broadband ‘Wi-Fi’ access for the public and further
enhance the government's vision in promoting ICT in the country.

The implementation of the national
project called "WAVE" in the country will make the people more
Internet savvy.
Upon completion of this
significant project, users will have another option to connect
to the Internet with ease other than the usual access at home or
office.
A contract signing ceremony
between TelBru and AV Micro Sdn Bhd was held yesterday morning
marking the beginning of this national project.
Forty-five base stations will
be built initially across the country and the project is
scheduled for completion in the second half of this year.
According to TelBru, with WAVE
or Wireless Access Via Ethernet, users will only need to locate
and connect to any of the WAVE networks using PDAs, laptops or
mobile devices with Wi-Fi capabilities to access the Internet
anywhere and at anytime at affordable |

rates.
Furthermore, public services
that can be delivered electronically will be available online.
This can range from information publication to interactive,
fully transactional services and integrated e-services.
As the premier Internet service
provider in the country, TelBru with this latest initiative will
bridge the digital gap and push ahead with the nation's
development through leveraging ICT in the Sultanate.
During the signing, Te1Bru was
represented by its Managing Director Awang Song Kin Koi and
witnessed by Awang Haji Sahralidin Hj Abdul Momin, while AV
Micro Sdn Bhd was represented by its two Managing Directors.

Awang
Song Kin Koi said that he is confident WAVE will play a significant
part in promoting Info-Communications Technology awareness among the
public in line with government's vision to extend broadband beyond
homes and offices.
He believed that with this product,
nascent concepts such as paperless and virtual offices will soon be
tangible and will in turn serve our people in a digital economy by
leveraging ICT.
According to TelBru, WAVE has
completed successful trial operations held in four locations in the
country since last year.
Currently, WAVE is implemented at
selected areas and is available in prepaid form. The prepaid cards
can be obtained at all licensed WAVE cards reseller and Telekom
Business Centres.
Internet penetration is expected to
increase with the availability of such a service nationwide.
The penetration level was six per
cent in 2000, five years after BruNet, a dial-up Internet access
started. In 2004, it rose to 30 per cent after the introduction of
broadband Internet connection called e-Speed in 2001. --
