Contributions Pour In For National Day Celebrations
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begawan - In A show of patriotism, some 50 private organisations and individuals have come forward to do their part in making the 23rd National Day a success through contributions and sponsorships.

More than $170,000 was handed over to the 23rd Brunei Darussalam National Day Sponsorship working committee in a ceremony at the Rizqun International Hotel, yesterday morning.

Receiving the sponsorships and contributions was Pehin Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Hj Mohammad, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, in his capacity as the co-chairman of the executive committee for the 23rd Brunei Darussalam National Day celebration.

The biggest contribution came from Brunei Shell Petroleum company (BSP), Brunei Shell Tankers Sdn Bhd (BST), Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn Bhd (BSM) and Brunei LNG who handed over $100,000.

On hand to present the contribution on behalf of the four companies was Pengiran Hj Yasmin bin Pg Mohammad, Managing Director of BSM.

Other major contributors included Royal Brunei Airlines with $10,000, Chop Teck Guan with $10,000, DST Communications with $8,000 and Hua Ho Department Store and Agriculture Farm with $6,000.

In addition to financial contributions, a number of companies also sponsored drinks, food and drinks, caps, T-shirts and even eggs.

Hj Marsad Hj Ismail, co-chairman of the 23rd Brunei Darussalam's National Day sponsorship working committee in his welcoming remarks thanked the private sector and individuals for their sponsorship.

The contributions will be used for decorative neon lights, lamppost banners and for the distribution of mini national flags for vehicles on February 16, he said.

He added that this year 30,000 mini national flags for vehicles would be distributed as compared to previous years, where only 25,000 mini national flags were distributed.

"The mini national flags flying high on vehicles all over Brunei Darussalam will enliven the atmosphere of the celebration and boost patriotism in the nation. It will also strengthen the spirit of nationhood as well as the loyalty to the sovereign and country," Hj Marsad said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in his speech said, "In line with this year's National Day theme, `Commitment to Empower the Nation's Capability', cooperation, commitment and support of all parties whether educational institutions, private or public bodies, NGOs, commercial or corporate firms, is an internal manifestation of the strong unity and united commitment in ensuring a successful national day celebration." -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
