Road Accidents Continue To Rise
By Azaraimy

Bandar Seri Begawan - Careless driving, not following appropriate lanes, showing scant regard to traffic rules and driving at break-neck speeds are some of the main reasons behind rising road accidents in the Sultanate, observers said.

Last year, the police recorded a whopping 2,710 cases of road accidents in the country. The number of road accidents in Brunei so far this year provides little sign of improvement.

In January, the police recorded 197 road accidents. Of the number, 93 involved car collisions, three involved collisions between cars and motorcycles, and 97 were self-accidents. There was also a case involving a car and a pedestrian and three mishaps involving cars and animals. The number of fatalities stands at one, while three people sustained serious injuries and 27 minor injuries.

According to police figures, last year 32 people lost their lives in road accidents, while 49 sustained serious injuries and 506 sustained minor injuries. Last year, the highest number of road accidents was recorded in the month of October, at 259, followed by May (249) and December (244). August and February last year recorded the highest number of fatalities, at five, due to road accidents. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
