Foreigners Nabbed For Prostitution
By Khairunnisa Ibrahim

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Anti-Vice Unit of the Royal Brunei Police Force apprehended a group of foreigners on prostitution charges.

The accused, nine women and two men, were caught on February 7, while engaging in harlotry in two separate places the Bunut Commercial Centre at Jalan Tutong and Kampong Delima Satu, Berakas.

A spokeswoman for the Anti-Vice Unit said that Wednesday's arrest was the fifth made this year.

"All of those arrested were foreigners," she said, adding that most of the women came from China.

The arrests were made after the police received tip-offs from the public, said Pg Hj Mohd Roslin, Acting Head of the Police Force's public relations unit.

Those arrested were held for further questioning, but some have been released on bail since then.

According to the official statement from the police, those found guilty could be punished under Section 5 of the Women and Girls Protection Act Cap 120, whereby they will be jailed for five years and/or fined $20,000.

While those convicted under Section 2 of the Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Act Cap 29, could face up to seven years in jail and receive 24 cane lashes.

The authorities also thanked the public for providing information leading to the arrest and encouraged others to come forward if they have any information regarding any activities that violate the sultanate's laws and regulations. It would be society's great contribution towards preserving the country's security.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
