Slight Hike In Used Car Sales
By Hadi DP Mahmud
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The second hand car market in Brunei saw a slight
increase in sales since some 40,000 government workers received
their annual bonuses on January 29.
While this is in line with earlier
expectations of some used car dealers that workers' fat pay checks
would boost, some shop-owners said sales in the first week of the
month were 'consistent' compared to the same period last month.
Bengkel Kereta Berakas managed to
sell five cars in the first week of February, said Siau Mei, a sales
representative of the Gadong-based used import car dealer.
"February looks like it is a good
month for us. During the whole of last month, we only managed to
sell two cars," she said. The figures are expected to remain the
same "more or less" in the following months, said the sales
representative.
Sunny `N' Suhaimi Auto, a Delima-based
used cot dealer, has experienced a slow start to February with the
sale of three cars in its first week, according to co-owner Sunny
Chan Meng Fart.
However, he was optimistic that
sales would reach a higher mark towards the end of the month.
"In January, we sold 13 cars, which
I thought was not so much of a satisfying result. I am looking
forward to the middle of the month, when the Chinese New Year
celebrations come. Hopefully by then more cars will be sold," he
said.
PAD Motors, a Beribi-based used car
dealer, saw consistent sales in the first week of the month,
according to Ken, a sales representative. No statistics or figures
were available from the used car dealer, which considers the first
few months of the year to be the market's "low season".
The government rewards workers with
annual bonuses every February. Depending on their level of salary
and job, post, the higher the salary, the less the percentage of the
bonus. For example, a lower-scale employee gets twice the amount of
his or her salary while a high post official get a maximum of 0.5
times his salary.-- Courtesy of
