UBD Marks Information Week
By Yusrin Junaidi

Bandar Seri Begawan - Universiti Brunei Darussalam Library yesterday held a closing ceremony for the 4" UBD Information Week, which stressed the importance of information in supporting academic, personal and organisational needs.

The guest of honour, Dato Paduka Dr Hj Ismail bin Hj Duraman, UBD Vice Chancellor, said "I am glad the University Library is again setting a good example in propagating the idea of appreciation and recognition of the importance of Information in our daily lives by organising this information week event."

The highlight of the event was the official launching of the University Digital Library System (e-Library@ubd portal) and the signing of the contractual agreement for the Virtual Library System (VILIS) project.

"Our University Library has evolved tremendously over the years, especially in the availability of ICT related resources despite facing some resource constraints.

"We strive to make available sources of information needed by the university community through our acquisition department, and the availability of electronic journal in the subscription list of the university has also increased," said Dr Hj Awang Suhaimi bin Hj Abdul Karim; organising committee chairman.

"The recent signing of Ministry of Education VILIS Brunei Project is another important milestone for academic libraries in Brunei Darussalam. School and college libraries will be connected to each other and resources can be shared and services will be targeted not only for the teaching community but also to the learning community," he said.

The VILIS Brunei initiative will make available database and references resources like Proquest 5000, Factiva and others intended for nationwide access for schools and colleges in the country, he said.
