Heart Of Borneo Signing Ceremony

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Brunei delegation, led by Pehin Dato Dr Awang Haji Ahmad bin Haji Jumat, departs for Bali, Indonesia today to attend the signing of the Heart Of Borneo Declaration ceremony, realising the conservation policy of Bomean natural resources.

He will also be conveying His Majesty's government's readiness to work together with the Indonesian and Malaysian governments to ensure the future of Heart of Borneo, a press release said.

He is accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources and senior officials from the MIPR and the Forestry Department.

The declaration was adopted during the BIMP-EAGA Summit in Cebu, Philippines on January 12, 2007. Borneo leaders recognised the area as one of the most important centres of biological diversity in the world, covering approximately 220,000 square km of equatorial rainforests and numerous wildlife species.

Under the HoB initiatives, Brunei Darussalam will be expected to have a stronger collaboration with its Bornean counterparts in the conservation of natural resources and protection strategy especially on the identified natural heritage sites within the Island of Borneo, the press release said.

Any development within the identified HoB area will be subject to underlying principles of sustainable development. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
