Religious Teachers College University To Offer Diplomas, Degrees
By Za'im Zaini

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Seri Begawan Religious Teachers College University is expected to enroll some 60-90 students in its first intake for religious teachers programmes at diploma and degree levels, according to a press release from the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The college university in its early stages will use the Seri Begawan Teachers College campus, while teaching staff will comprise local and foreign lecturers, the composition of which is currently being worked on.

The minimum qualification needed for entry to the college University for degree-level Teaching Programmes is `A' Levels or an STPU (Higher Religious Teaching Certificate).

The programmes at degree level will be offered to new students and those that have served in the teaching area for a year and hold an STPU or `A Level qualification.

Meanwhile, graduates of the teaching college certificate programme who have served in the teaching field for a year can undergo the teaching programme at diploma level.

An advertisement and detailed information on the offer for entry to the college university will be released soon.

The institution will be offering the courses soon with the objective of training religious teachers and providing them with the resources needed for religious quality service.

This is in line with the needs of Brunei Darussalam in ensuring that there is no shortage of qualified religious teachers and of those who can master religious knowledge, the ministry stated.

The college university, set to highlight the area of religious teaching in the country, will begin its first course in August this year by offering the Religious Teaching Diploma - which is equivalent to a HND or higher national diploma - and a bachelor's degree in religious teaching.

The upgrading of the Seri Begawan Religious Teaching College to `College University' status was announced in His Majesty's titah in conjunction with the New Year Hijrah 1428 last January.

"Thus in a bid to realise this, the Ministry of Religious Affairs is actively arranging and making preparation for all the related needs," the ministry added.

His Majesty in his titah aspired that the Seri Begawan Religious Teaching College that has successfully produced 3,697 qualified religious teachers so far would move to a higher level, which is a level that has the much-needed qualities of a college university. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
