M'sia, Brunei To Hold Talks On Liberalising Air Routes
By Za'im Zaini & Sonia K

Bandar Seri Begawan - Malaysia will hold talks with Brunei Darussalam to further liberalise aviation arrangements between the two countries, Bernama quoted Malaysian Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy as saying last Thursday.

The matter was discussed during his meeting with Brunei's Minister of Communications, Pehin Dato Seri SetiaAwg Hj Abu Bakar bin Hj Apong at the 12" Asean Transport Ministers meeting in Bangkok. "Both of us agreed on the need to look into the matter in view of the rapid growth and expansion in air services," said Datuk Chan.

Datuk Chan said that under the current bilateral arrangement, Malaysia had fully utilised all its rights and that the talks would be held in the middle of the year "to secure more rights, freer arrangement of aircraft types and frequencies".

Datuk Chan said the talks would not only be focussed on liberalising the air routes but also on having more flights and airlines serving them.

Meanwhile, the Asean Open Sky agreement will be implemented from 2008 with the air routes between capital cities of member countries to be liberalised the same year before expanding to other cities by 2015. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
