Workshop For Translators Ends
By Husin Ismail

Bandar Seri Begawan - Civil servants engaged in translation of history textbooks from Malay to English and vice versa attended a five-day workshop where they were taught how to use advanced computer technology in their work area.

Organised by the Brunei History Centre, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports with the cooperation of Civil Service Institute, Prime Minister's Department, 28 civil servants took part in the workshop.

Most of the participants were of the view that the workshop had done a world of good to their translation skills and the use of advanced computer technology has further enhanced their career prospects.

Civil servant Maswara Wash 25, from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Library, told The Brunei Times that the workshop organised by the History Centre was a great opportunity to further develop career prospects of the participants. She said the use of latest technology will greatly help translators in their day-to-day work.

"Technology is just around the corner and yet many people don't know how to utilise it in their daily life, including the place of work," said Maswara.

She added that the course will help the translators in writing multi-lingual history books of high standard.

A freelance participant, Datin Masni Ali, said the workshop has helped the participants in both theoretical and practical aspects of their work. She said, "As far as history books were concerned the translation has to be accurate."

At a ceremony yesterday at the Civil Service Institute, the participants were awarded certificates by Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama Dr Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri, Head of the Brunei History Centre. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
