Kuala Belait
- A driver was apprehended near the Rasau toll booth by
personnel from the Belait Immigration Enforcement Section on the
suspicion of operating illegal transportation services or `taxi sapu',
during an operation carried out on Tuesday.
In the operation codenamed 'Ops
Bongkar 14', a team of six Immigration officials detained the driver
of a localregistered vehicle after the vehicle passed through the
Rasau toll booth. The driver was allegedly transporting Indonesian
passengers to Pontianak, Indonesia.
Investigations revealed that `taxi
sapu' drivers constantly enter and exit the Sultanate via the Sungai
Tujoh Control Post for the purpose of carrying out their
transportation services by transporting passengers to and from
Pontianak. According to reports from the Immigration Enforcement
Section, the driver was assisted by another
Indonesian who collected payments
of B$90-$100 in cash from the passengers as transportation fee.
For the offence, the driver may
face a compoundable fine of B$600 for breaching Rule 9(4).
Meanwhile in a separate inspection,
enforcement officers arrested an Indonesian passenger of a vehicle
driven by a local man after he was found carrying two passports with
different names and dates of birth inside his bag. While claiming to
be the driver's helper, the passenger was suspected of having worked
in the country on two occasions using different passports.
The suspect was arrested for
further-investigation. If found guilty, he could be brought to court
to face charges of producing misleading documents under Chapter 28
(3) (d) Immigration Act Chapter 17.
