Traditional Medicine Found To
Contain Controlled Drugs

Begawan - The Ministry of Health (MoH) in a press release
announced yesterday that two traditional medicines were found to
contain substances that are controlled under the Poisons Act.
One of the medicines, 'Obat Asam
Urat & Flu Tulang Capsules' was found to contain Paracetamol,
Diclofenac and Phenylbutazone, while 'Obar Asam Urat & Flu Tulang
Plus Ginseng Tablets' was found to contain Ibuprofen, Paracetamol,
Propyphenazone and Dextromethorphan.
Both products are manufactured by 'Perusahaan
Jamu Alam Makasar, Indonesia'.
Ibuprofen, Diclofenac,
Propyphenazone are classified as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory
Drugs (NSAIDS) for relieving pain and inflammation, and unsupervised
ingestion may lead to gastric pain, hearing disturbance, shortness
of breath, swelling of face or lower legs and blood disorder.
Paracetamol
is commonly used for pain and fever and long-term consumption may
cause rashes, reduced blood pressure and blood disorders. In the
case of an over-dosage, it may lead to kidney and liver damage.
Meanwhile, unsupervised consumption
of Dextromethorphan may cause drowsiness, nausea and vomiting,
stomach pain and may also lead to confusion, nervousness and
restlessness.
Members of the public who have the
affected products are advised to destroy or surrender them to the
Pharmacy Enforcement Section, Block 2G, 8" floor, BSB Health Centre
in Jalan Ong Sum Ping, Bandar Seri Begawan for disposal. For further

The ministry meanwhile reminded the
public that it is an offence under the Poisons Act to sell any
product containing a substance controlled under the act. The penalty
for such an offence, upon conviction is a fine of B$8,000.00 or
