Brunei Gives Asean League The
Thumbs Up
By Jason Thomas
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Reports that Asean Football Federation might create
a regional football league featuring clubs and countries from the
Asean nations were met with approval by DPMM FC's head coach, Buketa
Ranko.
"I'm absolutely in favour of the
idea and I think it should have been created earlier," said the
Croatian.
The idea of a league for Asean
clubs and countries was mooted seven years ago but it was only
yesterday that Paul Mony, AFF's honorary secretary, revealed that
the federation was taking a serious look into its creation.
Stating that clubs and countries
can benefit and learn from each other, Ranko said the league would
also provide the much needed exposure to Bruneian players.
"The league will go a long way to
providing exposure and experience for local players, but the AFF
must be cautious as there are many complications when starting a new
league."
He feels that only the best two or
three clubs from each country should gain entry into the league.
Ranko
added that the AFF should also discuss the number of teams to
participate as well as venues for the matches.
Pg Waslimin PSJ Hj Abd Momin, a
council member of the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (Bafa),
also feels that such a league will be beneficial for local players
as Brunei footballers lack exposure.
"This can help improve' the
standard of Brunei footballers because players from other Asean
countries like Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia are more experienced
than us," said Pg Waslimin.
"We already have the Asian Football
Confederation Champions League, so this is the next logical step,"
added- Pg Waslimin. -- Courtesy of Borneo
