‘Fishermen’ Fishing For Cable
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Residents of a water village claimed that there was
something fishy going on. They allege that telephone cable thieves
disguised as `fishermen' were on the prowl.
The concerned residents told the
Bulletin that some of the `fishermen' would pretend to fish by the
bridge before stealing cables.
They claimed that after the
`fishermen' made off with the cables, there were disruptions to the
telephone service in the village. Many villagers had to use mobile
phones to communicate because it would take months to get the
telephone lines fixed in the village, they said.
"We have alerted residents from
other water villages to be suspicious of people fishing by the
bridges," they said, adding that scrap metal dealers should also be
monitored so that it would be easier to identify the culprits.
It is also possible that thieves of
telephone cables may have sold off the stolen goods to scrap metal
buyers at border towns by transporting them via mouse trails, they
said. -- Courtesy of Borneo
