Training Culminates Wit
Expectation For Educators To Be More Proactive

Begawan - Highlighting the role of skilled manpower, equipped
with vocational and technical education, which is the core part of
the education system, the Director of the Seameo VocTech Regional
Centre hoped that the participants who took part in the F.R.E.S.H.
Management Course for Administrators in Vocational and Technical
Education and Training (V'TET), would, emerge more proactive and
empowered.
Speaking at the course's closing
ceremony yesterday Mohammad Abu Bakar said one of the handbooks for
the course states that, "most school administrators do not possess
the training required knowledge and skills needed for the job. In
most cases they did not have formal in school administration and
management and are recruited from the pool of teachers, without the
necessary knowledge and skills, on management". He hoped that this
was not the case with Brunei's vocational and technical education
institutions.
Dr Bounthong Voungsaly ambassador
of Lao People's Democratic Republic to Brunei Darussalam, in his
speech said that through ,such courses, participants ,could gained
relevant opportunity, knowledge and skills on management principles,
policies, strategic planning, total' quality management, decision
making and other pertinent topics. The two-week programme consisted
of building concepts and approaches as applied in management of
Vocational and
Technical Education and Training
institutions, strategic planning, networking and link aging between
VTET institution and industry, problem solving and decision making,
Info Communication Technology, action plan, exposure to total
quality management tools and techniques.
The most challenging was the
preparation for their action plan. Although at some point, the
participants were pressured, they however managed to complete it on
time.
The course which was aimed at
advancing the knowledge, management and leadership skills of the
participants, has also met its other objective of strengthening
social bonds. There has been fruitful and meaningful interaction
between the Seameo VocTec staff and participants.
This interaction further
contributes to shared experiences in improving managerial leadership
skills and approaches. The participants have benefited
intellectually, culturally and socially from the training programme.
Dr Wilfredo H Libunao, business and
marketing manager and a management specialist, said on the course
report, "The course provided an opportunity for the participants- to
learn from each other".
He also stressed that the concepts
and theories were important in providing explanation to a particular
phenomena, which lead participants to new directions and new ideas
