Disaster Management Exercise Begins

Bandar Seri Begawan - Exercise 'Hikmat Bersatu 2' commenced last night, depicting a scenario where a landslide occurred at 8.l Opm at the Ulu Belalong Park, Temburong resulting in 50 deaths, injuries to 45 people and 100 missing.

The situation was made more severe as the bad weather caused a power blackout and telephone lines cut off at the affected area, according to a media release from the Department of Information, PM's Office, last night.

The government declared a state of emergency at the local level and mobilised its Fire and Rescue Department, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Brunei Police Force to conduct immediate evacuation and search and rescue in the affected areas.

The Natural Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) was convened to mobilise and coordinate an emergency response and relief assistance of government agencies, local and civil societies.

An official opening ceremony was held for this exercise yesterday (See P3) and was officially opened by the Commander of Royal Brunei Armed Forces.
