Craze For Gizmos Growing
By Debbie Too
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Call it gizmo addiction or power of the gadget.
When it comes to expensive toys like mobile phones, PDAs, laptops,
LCD televisions and so on, Bruneians don't keep their wallets under
a tight leash.
There are a few who would not be
willing to pay much for a phone, but Brunei residents, on the other
hand, love to splurge on gizmos.
With the average phone shop selling
as many as 400 phones a month, and the computer shop as many as
2,000 laptops per year, it is evident that technology plays a big
role in wooing the buyers in the sultanate.
"One of the popular items that we
sell are memory cards," said the store attendant of a well-known
phone shop.
LCD televisions are also among the
top of the pops. "Most people buy the smaller ones made from Akira
because they are affordable," said another shop attendant from a
reputable store in Gadong.
"In one year we have sold over
2,000 notebooks. You can buy a laptop for $800 when paid for in
cash,"said a computer technician. With new technology rapidly
surfacing nearly every few months, these proprietors have no worries
about a drop in sales. -- Courtesy of
