Tourism Course A Big Hit With
Bruneian Student
By Shareen Han
Bandar Seri
Begawan - There is an increasing demand for hospitality and
tourism management courses amongst Bruneians at the pre-university
and higher education level.
The tourism sector is moving up
worldwide and countries are strongly promoting the tourism industry,
said Lim Pang Ting, an education consultant based in Malaysia.
Lim, who was speaking to The Brunei
Times during the L&P education roadshow, yesterday said that
engineering and business courses were also popular choices, but
added that there was a decrease in the number of students pursuing
the health sciences.
She said that majority of Bruneian
students still prefer the UK and Australia as destinations for
higher studies. "About 30 per cent of students are interested in UK
and most of them are waiting for scholarships," she said.
Lim said that most courses require
students to obtain at least five `0' levels in order to qualify for
pre-university programmes.
She also advised students and
parents to be wary of unregistered courses that were not approved by
Brunei's Ministry of Education.
A representative from Malaysia's
Taylor's College also noted an increasing interest in the hotel and
tourism management courses.
"A lot depends on the student's
personality because if they are more outgoing and have a carefree
attitude, then they would be more interested in taking up such
courses," he said.
He added that there are less than
20 Bruneian students pursuing their studies at the college, but
there are more Malaysian students who grew up in Brunei studying
there.
Hj Khairol Hj Abdullah, a father of
five, said that his daughter is planning to apply for a scholarship
to study medicine.
"It does not have to be in the
government sector, because there are also other opportunities in the
private sector," he stated.

just finished her A' levels at Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah
College, said that Australia is her preferred destination for higher
studies. She is interested in studying law. -- Courtesy of
