Forum On Managing Change
By Debbie Too
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education
Organisation Regional Centre for Vocational and Technical Education
and Training (Seameo-VocTech) yesterday held a half-day forum on
Managing Change in Vocational and Technical Education and Training (VTET).
The forum is a continuation of the
on-going regional training programme titled FRESH (Futuristic,
Relevant, Enterprising, Sustainable and Holistic) management course
for administrators in VTET.
The forum, which was opened to the
public, provided an opportunity for other interested administrators
and educators to interact and learn from the speakers and other
participants.
In his speech, the centre's
director, Mohamad Abu Bakar, encouraged participants to interact and
learn from the gathering attended by a number of officials and guest
administrators.
`Change Management' is a strategic
concept for organisations, public or private, to be skilful in the
management of change (whether it be a change of staff, policies or
administration) so that the organisations are steered to be
responsive to the changing environment.
Dr Hj Azaharaini Hj Mohammad Jamil,
the Executive Director of the Centre for Strategic and Policy
Studies at the Prime Minister's Office, in his presentation said,
"Teachers today, for example, are more qualified than before and
authoritative in their field of specialisation. They like to be
consulted and many of them are eager to contribute to organisational
development.
"They are generally more vocal and
have their own ideas of what institutional changes are needed, when
talking about communication in the workplace," he added.
He highlighted the fact that
communication helps improve and implement the change that is needed
to push the organisation further and that `Change managers should
have people skills in team building, forging strong interpersonal
relationships and communicating within groups'.
The forum culminated with a
question and answer session. The forum was held at the
