Teachers, Parents Team Up
By Sobrina Rosli
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School (SMJA)
yesterday held a meeting between teachers and their students'
parents on the students' welfare.
An exhibition was also held
highlighting the school's efforts at ensuring the students' welfare
through the school's counselling services. The event was held for
parents of students from Form 3, Form 5 and Form 2 express classes.
School principal Seroja Siau said,
"By having these types of interactions, parents can have a better
understanding of their children's performance and work together with
teachers in finding solutions for their children to improve on their
weaknesses."
"We have around 117 good and
qualified teachers enough for our students here, there are over 200
students taking their `O' levels this year and 210 Form 3 students
sitting their form requirement exam," added the principal.
Zainal
Abidin Samip, the president of the parent-teacher association, said:
"We, want to develop a sense of community among the parents,
teachers and students as this will help in developing the child
positively," he said.
"Education is a continuing process.
If there is a better understanding among the relevant people in a
student's life, it would help them improve," he explained.
Through the association, leaders
hope to spread the awareness of the importance of being involved
with teachers as it helps to identify the children's problems.
Last year, the association
organised a motivational forum for students, a walkathon and
religious activities, among others.
"Our main focus for this year is to
organise family events in efforts to build a good rapport among the
parents," he said.
Dr Greg Keane, an English teacher
at the school, said, "It is important for parents to be involved in
their children's education, they should talk to them about their
work, practice with them and sort out issues together."
School counsellor Ahmad Rafiuddin
Abdul Hamid said, "Counselling is a soft approach in dealing with
the youth and having them know that there is someone in the school
who would want to listen to them." -- Courtesy of
