Live Web Cast Of National Day

Bandar Seri Begawan - This year the official website for the 23rd National Day of Brunei Darussalam will provide a live telecast of celebrations through video streaming.

The website (www.nationalday.org_bn), to be launched today, apart from providing members of the public the latest news and information regarding the upcoming event, will also provides live pictures of the events on that day through video streaming.

Sastra Sarini, head of the English News and Website Division of the Department of Information, said that this was not the first time that such a website was set up. In fact, the department had been using the cyberspace to disseminate information on auspicious events since 2004.

Earlier, relevant information regarding the National Day could only be made available through the conventional print and broadcast media.

"Using websites is the latest way of disseminating information, " said Sastra and pointed out that the contents were regularly updated to provide visitors with the latest information.

She added that the website offered the advantage of being readily accessible to citizens and residents of Brunei who were currently not in the country. It also allows them to view the festivities via live streaming of Radio Television Brunei broadcasts.

The department works with a private company, Britmart Sdn Bhd, to build and maintain the website. While Sastra and two colleagues, Hj Ariffin and Hjh Norhijrah,-work full time on the content, Britmart handles the website design. Planning for the website had started in the last week of December last year, Sastra said.

"This is part of our cooperation with the private sector, to give companies an opportunity to be involved," she said.

Carrying a blue and white theme, with a picture of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien mosqueas a prominent display, the website offers visitors a calendar of events in the days leading up to the National Day and a scheduled programme for the day itself.

Visitors would not only be able to find out about last year's National Day themes and logos, but will also have the chance of winning some prizes if they participate in the National Day online quiz.

The website also promotes Brunei as it features the country's facts, national anthem and patriotic songs, said Sastra. There is a large digital clock displaying the countdown to the festivities. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
