14th Asia Export Control Seminar To Discuss WMD Proliferation
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begawan - Police Superintendent Mohd Jammy bin Hj Mohd Shah Al Islam of the Royal Brunei Police Force will be joining the 141h Asia Export Control Seminar which is scheduled to take place in Japan this February 6-8.

Organised by the Centre for Information on Security Trade Control (CISTEC) with the support of the Japanese Government, the seminar is set against the backdrop of increasing concern over the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the Asian region.

The Japanese Ambassador to Brunei, Mr Hashimoto ltsuo said that the proliferation of WMD and related materials, equipment and technologies remains a serious concern for global and regional security.

"Procurement activities by states and non-state actors of concern are becoming increasingly sophisticated, such as circumvention of transaction routes or use of front companies," he said. "As a result, there is a significant risk that all countries and regions may be used as manufacturing or trans-shipment points for WMD and related items. Therefore, it is important for all countries and regions to continue efforts to prevent proliferation activities."

Mr Hashimoto added that Export Controls are the key means of preventing the proliferation of WMD.

"Every country and region in Asia should place high priority on the establishment of an effective export control system as well as its implementation, which was called for in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540," he said, adding that APEC Ministers identified key elements of effective export control systems in 2004.

Aside from Brunei Darussalam, officials from Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taipei, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Viet Nam, and Japan will participate in the seminar. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
