BSP Holds Briefing On Scholarship

Bandar Seri Begawan - About 60 teachers from secondary schools nationwide attended the one-day BSP career and scholarship process briefing at Panaga Hall yesterday.

It was the third such briefing organised by the Student-" Affairs Section of the Human Resources Planning and Development of Brunei Shell Petroleum.

The objectives of the briefing session was to explain to teachers the BSP scholarship requirements, processes and procedures as well as the career opportunities that are available in BSP and Brunei Liqufied Natural Gas (BLNG).

In her welcoming remarks, Hjh Rosnani Taha, head of the company's Strategic Planning, and Citizen Management Development, said that at present, there are 93 BSP scholars who are undertaking their studies in the United Kingdom, Australia, Brunei's Institute of Technology (ITB) and Malaysia.

Most of their scholars are reading undergraduate programmes, while the rest are doing their postgraduate and Higher National Diploma (HND).

She also explained that the session was an opportunity for teachers and the student affairs officials from BSP to network and further discusses issues related to BSP scholarship and recruitment.

Officials from BSP's scholarship division said to secure a BSP scholarship; eligible students must obtain three relevant `.A' level subjects with grades BCC and above as well as five credits in `O' level subjects including Bahasa Melayu, Maths and English.

During the briefing, H]'h Rosnani also discussed what the company looks for in potential staff. Based on the Brunei Shell Petroleum Recruitment Unit's criteria to produce for choosing quality Bruneian engineers, the criteria include ability, achievement, people skills. Potential employees must also demonstrate the ability to analyse data quickly and learn fast, and the creativity to propose innovative solutions.

On top of that they have to accept the course offered by BSP and secure unconditional admission from the university and more importantly they need to get through the interview by the Ministry of Education.

This was followed with career briefings in subsurface, well engineering, operations and Brunei LNG.
