Bandar Seri
Begawan - The government of Japan and the Japan Foundation
yesterday donated books on Japan to the Brunei National Library at
the Language and Literature Bureau.
Japanese Ambassador of Japan to
Brunei, Mr Hashimoto ltsuo presented the books to Dato Paduka Awg
Haji Mahmud bin Haji Bakyr, Acting Director of the Language and
Literature Bureau under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The books were donated under the
Library Support Programme of the Japan Foundation. The foundation
organises programmes to promote Japanese language learning and raise
awareness on Japanese lifestyle, culture, history, politics,
education and economy.
The Language and Literature Bureau
received 38 books on Japanese culture, history and other topics.
Since 1995, the Japan Foundation programme has donated 586 books,
including 207 books for Universiti Brunei Darussalam and 88 books
for SEAMEO Voctech.
Titles of the donated books include
"Japan Pop!", "Inside the World of Japanese Popular Culture",
"Japanese Sports: A History", "Culture and Technology in Modem
Japan" and "Wearing Ideology: State, Schooling and Self Presentation
in Japan".
"I hope that many Bruneians will
utilise these books as much as possible as a useful resource in
order to obtain a better understanding of Japanese history, sports
technology and culture. There exists, between Japan and Brunei, a
solid and friendly relationship, particularly in the economic field.
I believe that the donation of Japanese books will further
contribute to the understanding of Japan in many fields,
strengthening the relations between our two countries," said Mr
Itsuo. -- Courtesy of Borneo
