BAFA On The Rise Of Women's
Football
By J. Klinnsmann
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Women's football is catching on like wildfire in
Brunei - Darussalam the past few months. Not only are teams
mushrooming but tournaments are also organised at a pace that is best
described as fast and furious.
Football Association of Brunei
Darussalam (BAFA) Secretary-General, Pg Hj Matusin Pg Hj Matasan, when
contacted for his views, said: "BAFA is very happy to note that the
ladies are so enthusiastic about football, it's great for Brunei
Darussalam football. In this way, it will get the ladies and girls
physically active, healthy, fit and productive, which is, in fact, in
line with His Majesty's Titah for the rakyat and especially the pupils
and children to be more physically active. After all, the children as
His Majesty stated in his Titah are our nation's most valuable asset.
"This is also in sync with this
year's National Day theme: 'Mempertingkatkan Daya Saing Bangsa' or
enhancing the Nation's Capabilities. Healthy citizens and residents
are basic to the achievement of this aspiration
Nonetheless, having noted the great
football enthusiasm, BAFA feels that a few important details need to
be observed by the ladies or for that matter, the men.
The BAFA Secretary General
reiterated: "All football activities in Brunei Darussalam come under
the auspices of BAFA. Hence, all tournaments too must procedurally be
informed to BAFA. BAFA needs to coordinate all football activities to
fit into a master schedule of events so that we can indicate, for
example, clashes of dates, venues etc. We are here to assist the
players and the teams, " he explained.
On the issue of development, Pg Hj
Matusin added that it is best for the ladies' game to follow a
developmental path. An excellent example of football development is
Projek Ikan Pusu. PiP has taken the initiative to start a girls' team
called PIP FC. The conditioning exercises PIP FC do are very aerobic
and fun, plus the cardiovascular benefit will have a positive impact
on their health status.
Back to the issue of organisation,
BAFA would welcome discussions with interested parties to facilitate
the growth and development of women's football in Brunei Darussalam.
"Let's all enjoy football not only as
a spectator sport but be actively involved as well. For the children,
"a sound mind in a fit and healthy body" is a great reason to start
but further down the track, it is the health of our people and hence
the wealth and future of our nation that is at stake." --
