The Philippine Ambassador's Cup Basketball Tourney Begins

Bandar Seri Begawan – Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, Pehin Major General (rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awg Hj Mohammad declared open the first Filipino Basketball League and Tournament to vie for "The Philippine Ambassador's Cup" at Harun's Gym in the capital yesterday.

Also present at the opening ceremony was the Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Viriginia H. Benavidez.

In his opening remarks, the Filipino Basketball Association (FBA) president, Mario G. Poriahe, said the tournament was organised "to foster camaraderie, fellowship among Filipinos through sports, provide fun and entertainment and promote a healthy lifestyle for everyone."

On his part, Pehin Dato Hj Mohammad said his ministry full supports activities "geared towards promoting physical fitness, enhancing closer friendships through sports, as well as contribution to charitable and humanitarian projects".

He later performed the ceremonial toss-up to mark the start of competition, which yesterday featured the Kingston Pepsi and Kim Engineering teams.

The Philippine Ambassador's Cup tournament will continue until the championship final, which is scheduled for April 9. The elimination rounds will be held on Wednesdays, between 7 pm and 11 pm, and on Sundays, between 12 noon and 4 pm, at Harun's Gym, at the Bandar Seri Begawan multi-storey carpark.

Eighteen teams are taking part in the tournament. Part of the proceeds from the championship will be donated to the special people's association in the country, as well as to the fund for victims of the recent landslide in the Philippines. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
