By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan – Brunei's Ministry of Health has advised people to stop using' Bausch and Lomb's ReNu multi-purpose lens solution as a precautionary measure following a rise in fungal eye infection cases among contact lens users in Singapore.

In a statement released yesterday in the wake of the Bulletin's article on Wednesday, the ministry advised users to stop using the lens solution immediately as it has the potential to cause serious consequences to eyesight caused by fungal infection to the cornea.

Bausch and Lomb has suspended sales of the product to facilitate the ongoing investigation.

Contact lens users have been advised to use other alternative solutions and to practise proper care and correct use.

ChannelnewsAsia had reported on Tuesday that there has been a rise in the number of fungal infections of the eye among contact lens users in Singapore. A total of 39 cases were detected, up from the 22 reported previously.

Thirty-five people out of the 39 contact lens users infected with the Fusarium solari fungus said they had used the solution. A majority of the 39 cases started developing the infection in the second half of last year. Most of those infected were teenagers and young adults, aged between 15 and 24 years. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
