Bangladesh Marks Language Martyrs
Day
By Kartika Rahman
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Bangladeshis observe Language Martyrs Day today to
pay respect and homage to the martyrs of the Language Movement of 1952
at home and abroad by placing floral wreaths at the Shihad Minar.
The love and respect these martyrs
had aroused for Bengali mother-tongue and culture eventually laid the
foundation of the war of liberation of Bangladesh.
Blood was shed on Feb 21, 1952 at the
Central Shahid Minar (near Dhaka Medical College Hospital) to
establish Bangla as a state language.
February 21 was declared
International Mother Language Day from a unanimous recommendation by
the General Commission for the proposal presented at the Plenary
Session of the United Nations Education and Scientific Organisation (Unesco)
General Conference on November 17, 1999.
Bangladesh officially sent a proposal
to Unesco requesting the world body adopt a resolution declaring
February 21 as International Mother Language Day.
The Unesco Language Division marked
the proposal from the government of Bangladesh. --
