US Upholds Close Ties With Brunei
By M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan – The United States of America is keen to strengthen
bilateral ties with Brunei Darussalam, especially in the field of
education and praised Brunei's efforts in peacekeeping and monitoring
in Mindanao and Aceh.
|
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State
for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, United States Department of
State, Mr Eric John, was in Brunei on a working visit from Feb 11
to 13.
In an exclusive interview
yesterday with the Borneo Bulletin, the Deputy Assistant Secretary
said that his first visit to Brunei was useful.
One of the main focuses of his
visit was to strengthen cooperation in education, particularly to
increase the number of Bruneians studying in the US.
Economically, Brunei and the US
are continuing to work under the 2001 bilateral Trade and
Investment Framework Agreement.
Yesterday afternoon, Mr John met
the Minister of Energy and said the meeting provided him with a
better understanding on the energy sector in the country.
He acknowledged the significance

participation as a member ofAsean
and that he said can be used further as a platform for the country
to work in the international arena.
Taking example from the nation's
participation and role in the peacekeeping and monitoring effort
in Mindanao and Aceh, Mr John said this has shown how well Asean
has been used by Brunei. |
"Aceh is a good example," he said and
added that Brunei's understanding of the language and culture has
played a role in assisting in the relief and reconstruction effort.
Regarding the controversy surrounding
the publication of cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad in Denmark and
other European nations, which has now become a major issue around the
world, the Deputy Assistant Secretary agreed that the cartoons were
indeed offensive and that there should be some responsibility or
accountability on what had happened.
Asked whether the gap between Muslims
and the West has widened as a result of this, he said the after effect
of this issue can bring both parties closer together, especially
during the healing process that follows. There is a lesson that can be
learnt from this, entire he said and added that there was no need for
violence.
On China's growing economic strength
and its effect on Southeast Asia, he said the growth is healthy for
countries in the region, especially the huge market China offers and
the trade ties that have been implemented. Though some have expressed
concern over China's growing role in the region, he said this could
prove to be positive especially if it is seen to enhance stability in
the region.
He quickly added that this doesn't
mean that US role will diminish in the region. "There is room for both
US and China," he said.
On terrorism and the level of
cooperation between US and countries in the region in containing
global terrorism, Mr John said that the cooperation has been strong.
He acknowledged the development of the security apparatus from the
police to the judicial system of several countries in the region that
have been implemented to fight terrorism.
Pointing to countries like Indonesia,
Malaysia and Singapore, he said policing there have been strengthened
and so does the judges and prosecutors in their fight against
terrorism. This is further strengthened by the bilateral cooperation
between the US and Asean countries. He also commented on the
transparent manner in which some of the judicial hearings have taken
place.
This year, the US will look further
to enhance the relationship and partnership both culturally,
economically and socially with countries in the region, he added.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary of
State was appointed to his post in June last year and is responsible
for US relations with Southeast Asian countries and Asean.
Previously, he was the Minister
Counselor for Political Affairs at the US Embassy in Seoul.
