Concerns Over Vitamin C, Botox Injections From Dubious Sources
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - There have been some concerns over a few women seeking beauty treatments like Vitamin C therapy and Botulinum Toxin (Botox) for wrinkles from alleged fly-by-night beauticians who come to Brunei from overseas for a short period of time.

Some women have been receiving treatments in the comfort of their homes after being introduced to such beauticians by their friends.

"I have tried to advice my wife against taking beauty treatments like Botox or Vitamin C injections but she did not listen to me. The credibility of these beauticians are doubtful," said a worried husband.

"Such treatments could work if conducted by qualified specialists but they can go wrong if handled by unqualified beauticians," he continued.

If injected in large doses, Botox, short for Botulinum Toxin Type A, may cause Botulism, a fatal food poisoning that leads to muscle weakness, paralysis, impaired vision and death.

However, for cosmetic purposes, Botox is injected into the skin to prevent the formation of wrinkles by minimising the contraction of upper facial muscles caused by expressions like frowning, blinking and squinting.

Beauticians also inject women with Vitamin C with the promise of a lighter complexion, anti-aging benefits and general good health. Its side effects reportedly include localised inflammation of the veins, thinning of bones, kidney problems and some allergic reactions. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
