PWM Celebrates New Year
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begawan - Thousands of Malaysians residing in the country got together to celebrate Chinese New Year at the International Convention Centre in Berakas on Saturday evening.

Deputy Minister of Education Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman attended the event as the guest of honour.

Organised by the Persatuan Warganegara Malaysia (PWM), the celebration kicked off with a lion dance by Chung Hwa Middle School's lion dance troupe, and accompanied by a drum performance.

Ho Ley Hoon and Jackson Ting of the organising committee, in their addresses, wished all Malaysians in Brunei a prosperous new year.

Ting, who is also deputy president of PWM, said that the association had been receiving tremendous support from Malaysians residing in Brunei since its establishment.

Recalling past events organised by the association, Ting said among the activities held were a blood donation drive, a golf tournament, and recently, a tsunami charity walkathon.

He also credited the successes of the events to the dedicated working committee and support from the public.

He hoped PWM will continue to receive support from Malaysians in Brunei. Acting High Commissioner of Malaysia in Brunei Saiful Azam Abdullah, in his speech, said the event on Saturday evening showed the consolidation and strength of the interracial ties of Malaysians in the country.

He also believed by celebrating major festivities, PWM had brought a sense of togetherness among Malaysians as well as given them an opportunity to interact with Bruneians.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of prizes to 366 outstanding students by the guest of honour.

Other activities held during the evening were dance performances and a lucky draw. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
