336 Bruneians Victims in Miri last
year
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Miri
- Nearly a
quarter of criminal cases reported in Miri last year involved victims
from Brunei Darussalam, which revealed that Brunei visitors continue
to be favourite targets of thieves in the oil town.
Out of 1,352 reported criminal cases
in Miri last year, as many as 336 involved victims (or 24 per cent)
from Brunei.
The figure was revealed by Head of
Miri District Police, Assistant Commissioner Fauzie Sa'adi Diol, to
Berita Harian, a Malaysian Malay-language daily last Saturday.
However, he assured the safety of
Brunei travellers to Miri and denied reports that local border-hoppers
had been the prime targets of gangsters in the oil town.
He also admitted that there is a
significant increase in criminal cases that victimised Bruneian
travellers but the percentage was insignificant.
He added Bruneian travellers were
mainly victims of stolen properties such as motor vehicles. Assistant
Commissioner Fauzie said the figure involving victims from Brunei is
indeed high compared to statistics 10 years ago.
"But the percentage is still small
compared to the number of Bruneians who visit Miri every year," he
said.
He said the safety of Bruneians in
Miri is still guaranteed and they should not fear to come to the oil
town for holidays or shopping. --
