Brunei’s Book Fair Opens At Indoor Stadium

Bandar Seri Begawan - The "Pesta Buku Brunei 2005" was launched yesterday morning at the Indoor Stadium, Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex in Berakas.

The book fair organised in conjunction with the 21st National Day celebration will run for 10 days.

Present to officiate the launching ceremony was the guest of honour, Pehin Dato Seri Paduka (Dr) Haji Awang Hussain, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

In his speech the guest of honour said he hoped the book fair would give the public an opportunity to get hold of quality and resourceful reading materials.

He also highlighted the importance of books being relevant and needed as important references in the education process of Brunei.

Also present at the ceremony were Haji Sumadi bin Sukaimi, Acting Director of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP); Haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Zainal, Deputy Director of DBP cum Chairman of the 2005 Brunei Book Fair; and, Haji Jemat bin Haji Ampal, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

There are about 75 booths set up for 45 participants representing local and regional book dealers, distributors, publishers, vendors and IT establishments.

The fair co-organised by DBP and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, is aimed to increase greater appreciation for books among the public and to bring together e-leaming providers under one roof.

The book fair is also a great opportunity for exhibitors to promote their latest publications and products as well as a better way for them to advertise their company.

Besides that, during the period of the fair, competitions such as colouring and drawing, quizzes, mind tests, jawi writing as well as gulingtangan and youth club perfonnances, theatre plays and tausyeh will also be held to enliven the fair.

The Book Fair will open everyday from 8.30am to l0 pm except on Friday where it will open from 8.30am to 11.30am and from 2.30pm to l0 pm. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
