Senior Citizens In Brunei To Increase Four Times By 2050

Bandar Seri Begawan – Senior citizens aged more than 60 are expected to increase four-fold by 2050.

Awang Serbini bin Haji Ali, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, said for the first time in history, the number of elderly will surpass the number of children around the world.

Meanwhile, the number of people aged over 75 will also increase.

Awang Serbini said that the rate of illness either mental or physical is high among the elderly although most of them are healthy.

The Acting Permanent Secretary stated this at the Mental Tranquillity Forum held in Berakas.

The Speech was read by Dr Haji Affendy, Director General of Medical Services.

He said senior citizens can also be affected by illnesses such as depression and demensia.

Among the elderly aged 65, an estimated five per cent will be affected by both illness but among those aged over 80 the rate will increase until 40 per cent.

He further stated for elderly affected by mental problem, the most suitable model to be used was evaluation and treatment done at their own home.
